Meet The Storyhouse

The wooden modular dollhouses that invite children to build, imagine and tell their stories - at home and on the go.

The Storyhouse is a small, mum-run business, based in a beautiful village in Bulgaria.

The nature around us gives our children endless opportunities for exploration, stargazing, and daydreaming. Most of all — they love to play. Free, unstructured play that makes their eyes sparkle.

How about toys? — you might ask. Well, they would go for the toys that didn’t tell them what to do or what to be. A stick that was a sword one day and a fishing rod the next. A scarf that was a crown in the morning and a swimming pool by lunch.

And that’s how The Storyhouse was born. Because every story they created needed a home — a toy that doesn’t come with a script or colour, but sets the stage and lets the child lead.

Because the best toys don’t tell children what to do. They invite them to explore what they can become.

I believe in childhood as a time that deserves to be protected and cherished. The time to play, to be silly, to read the same story over and over again. The time for cuddles, for giggles, for rolling down hills and splashing in puddles. The time to make friends.

Everything I make at The Storyhouse starts from this belief: that play matters. Through play, children figure out the world. It nourishes their creativity and storytelling. It helps them explore new possibilities and make sense of their feelings.

And when we sit down with them — cutting out paper furniture, choosing wallpapers, building a little world together — that’s when the bonding happens. Bonding time nourishes the heart. There is nothing more important than spending time with our children, and nothing more lasting than the memories we make together.

The Storyhouse was designed to create space for all of this. Not to entertain for five minutes, but to invite children into open-ended play that grows with them — and to give families a reason to sit down and create together.

HOW WE MAKE IT

HOW WE MAKE IT

Every Storyhouse is designed and made in our workshop in Bulgaria.

We use high-quality birch wood and finish each piece by hand with a natural wax. Nothing synthetic, nothing harsh. Every storyhouse is slightly different, because every piece of wood has its own character.

I designed the dollhouses to be modular — three different-sized modules that connect, stack, and combine however the child imagines. The walls click together with magnets, no tools needed, and little hands can build and rebuild them independently. When playtime is over, they pack flat and tuck into a cotton bag for storage or travel.

Packaging With Purpose

From day one, I knew I didn’t want wasteful packaging. Each Storyhouse comes in a cotton bag you can reuse for storage, travel, or anything else. And the cardboard box? I turned it into part of the play. The inside is printed with furniture templates — just cut, fold, decorate, and bring the Storyhouse to life. What could have been waste becomes a craft project, a conversation, and bonding time together.

These aren’t separate decisions — they’re all part of the same idea. The birch wood, the natural finish, the cotton bags, the templates printed on the box, the flat-pack design that means we ship less air and use less fuel. Every choice is made with care for the children who play with these toys and the world they’re growing up in.

All our materials are certified to meet EU safety standards.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WALLPAPERS

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WALLPAPERS

Every Storyhouse wallpaper is created in collaboration with independent illustrators.

I choose to work with individual artists and small businesses rather than taking a quicker or cheaper route — because I believe in supporting local talent, building real relationships, and bringing genuine artistry into the play.

Each wallpaper design starts as a conversation — a theme, a mood, a world we want to open up for children. The illustrators bring it to life with their own style and imagination, and the result is something that feels handmade and full of character, because it is.
